About Frida Kahlo:

Frida Kahlo was one of Mexico's greatest artists. She is known for creative and candid self-portraits, paintings inspired by the nature and artefacts of Mexico and the extraordinary vibrancy of her work.

Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907. At the age of six, she contracted polio, which caused her to be bedridden for nine months. The disease damaged her right leg and she walked with a limp thereafter. Later in 1925, when she was a student, she was involved in a bus crash and suffered several serious injuries to her spine and pelvis, which would plague her for the rest of her life.

While recovering from the ordeal, Kahlo began painting and finished her first self-portrait the following year. After that, she continued to paint, exploring themes of identity, gender, postcolonialism and race in Mexican society.

In 1929, she married the famed Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, and though their relationship was tempestuous and messy, they continued to support and inspire each other's work throughout their lives.

Kahlo's work tended to employ a naïve folk-art style, mixing realism with fantasy. She is often identified as a surrealist painter and her deeply personal paintings have had a profound impact on the world in which we live.
