About Jane Austen:

Jane Austen is one of the most widely read novelists in the world. Her books, rich in satire, wit and wisdom, are set among the landed gentry of her time. And though they defined the period’s novel of manners, her sharp observations of the social and emotional concerns of ordinary people have made them timeless classics, beloved of readers across all eras and ages.

The daughter of a Hampshire clergyman, Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775, the seventh of eight children. She grew up in a cheerful household, with her sister Cassandra as her closest friend and confidante.

Though she began writing as a child, her six major novels were finessed and finalised between the years 1809 and 1817, the year of her untimely death.
