About the Poet

Katharine Tynan was an Irish nationalist poet and novelist who was born in Dublin in 1861. She was a contemporary of the poet William Butler Yeats, and like him developed a deepinterest in Celtic mythology. Her poetry was informed by Irish patriotism and also the Irish Catholicism of her day. Her Collected Poems were published in 1930, with her most famous poem being The Wind That Shakes the Barley.

A prodigious writer, she produced five autobiographical volumes: Twenty-five Years (1913), The Middle Years (1917), The Years of the Shadow (1919), The Wandering Years (1922), and Memories (1924). She also wrote more than 100 romantic novels, the best known of which is The House in the Forest (1928).
