About the Poet:

Widely regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets of any age, Sappho was an Archaic Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. Though only a handful of details are known about her life, it is believed she was born around 615 BCE to an aristocratic family on the Greek island of Lesbos.

Just as Plato was often referred to as “The Poet”, Sappho was similarly known as “The Poetess”. Plato called her the “tenth Muse” and her likeness was honoured on coins.

Her poems are personal, direct, displaying a powerful expression of emotion, while the innovative meter she used in composition later became known as the "Sapphic" meter.
