About Shirley Chisholm
Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman in Congress (1968). The daughter of immigrants from Barbados and Guyana, Chisolm was also the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States from one of the two major political parties (1972), using the slogan "Unbought and Unbossed".
Though she lost the Democratic nomination to anti-Vietnam candidate Senator George McGovern, she remained in politics, serving another 11 years in Congress.
She was a consistent advocate for poor, inner-city residents, stating “I am and always will be a catalyst for change”. She was a founding member of both the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women’s Political Caucus (1971).
Shirley Chisholm died on 1 January 2005 following complications from a series of strokes. She was 80 years old. Her grave contains the words "Unbought and Unbossed".
