About the Artists
The history of Impressionist art in the 19th century largely excludes women. But there were several extraordinarily talented female artists painting in this style.
Most women Impressionists could not freely frequent the dance halls, cafes and theatres their male counterparts painted. So they exploited the domestic spaces they were confined to, presenting a glimpse of the private roles of women as mothers, sisters, wives and more.
As a result, they created art that offered a daring and different reflection of the world – one that was female-focused.
